Surface Brightness Measurements for APM Galaxies

چکیده
This paper considers some simple surface brightness (SB) estimates for galaxies in the Automated Plate Measuring Machine (APM) catalogue in order to derive homogeneous SB data for a very large sample of faint galaxies. The isophotal magnitude and area are used to estimate the central surface brightness and total magnitude based on the assumption of an exponential SB profile. The surface brightness measurements are corrected for field effects on each UK Schmidt plate and the zero-point of each plate is adjusted to give a uniform sample of SB and total magnitude estimates over the whole survey. Results are obtained for 2.4 million galaxies with blue photographic magnitudes brighter than bJ = 20.5 covering 4300 deg in the region of the south galactic cap. Almost all galaxies in our sample have central surface brightness in the range 20 to 24 bJ mag arcsec−2. The SB measurements we obtain are compared to previous SB measurements and we find an acceptable level of error of ±0.2 bJ mag arcsec−2. The distribution of SB profiles is considered for different galaxy morphologies for the bright APM galaxies. We find that early-type galaxies have more centrally concentrated profiles.

An HI Survey of LSB galaxies selected from the APM Survey
We present preliminary results of a neutral hydrogen (HI) redshift survey to find low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies in the very nearby universe. Our sample consists of all galaxies in the APM catalog (Maddox et al. 1990) with a mean surface brightness of μ ≥ 24 mag/arcsec, down to a magnitude limit of bj ≤ 17. With the Parkes 64m radiotelescope 35 objects were detected at v < 4300 km s. The...
متن کاملThe Fornax spectroscopic survey I. Survey strategy and preliminary results on the redshift distribution of a complete sample of stars and galaxies
The Fornax Spectroscopic Survey will use the Two degree Field spectrograph (2dF) of the Anglo-Australian Telescope to obtain spectra for a complete sample of all 14000 objects with 16.5 ≤ bj ≤ 19.7 in a 12 square degree area centred on the Fornax Cluster. The aims of this project include the study of dwarf galaxies in the cluster (both known low surface brightness objects and putative normal su...
متن کاملThe APM Bright Galaxy Catalogue
The APM Bright Galaxy Catalogue lists positions, magnitudes, shapes and morphological types for 14,681 galaxies brighter than bJ magnitude 16.44 over a 4,180 square degree area of the southern sky. Galaxy and stellar images have been located from glass copy plates of the United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope (UKST) IIIaJ sky survey using the Automated Photographic Measuring (APM) facility in Cambrid...
متن کاملA Study of Active Galactic Nuclei in Low Surface Brightness Galaxies with Sloan Digital Sky Survey Spectroscopy
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) in low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) have received little attention in previous studies. In this paper, we present detailed spectral analysis of 194 LSBGs from the Impey et al. (1996) APM LSBG sample which have been observed spectroscopically by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 (SDSS DR5). Our elaborate spectral analysis enables us to carry out, for...
متن کاملEvaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies
The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...
